Steven R. Spurgeon, Ph.D.

Dr. Steven R. Spurgeon is an internationally recognized materials data scientist accelerating the discovery of new materials by teaching scientific instruments how to think. He founded and directs the TIME Research Group through his joint appointments as Faculty at Colorado School of Mines and Senior Materials Data Scientist at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR). He also serves as a Research Fellow at the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI) at the University of Colorado–Boulder. Through this collaborative effort, he unites artificial intelligence with advanced microscopy to create “self-driving” laboratories that enable the rapid design of next-generation materials for advanced energy and computing.

With over 16 years of experience leading multidisciplinary teams at national laboratories, Steven has a proven track record of transformative research, resulting in over 85 publications, multiple licensed technologies, and several open-source software packages. His impact on the field has been recognized with prestigious honors, including the R&D 100 Award and the Microscopy Society of America’s Burton Medal. He is also deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists and actively serves the research community as a journal editor and proposal reviewer.
