Spurgeon Elected Fellow of American Physical Society

I am honored to have been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society through the Topical Group on Data Science. The citation reads: "For pioneering the integration of autonomous microscopy and advanced data science to reveal fundamental physical mechanisms in complex oxides, interfaces, and radiation environments — bridging experiment and theory to forge a new paradigm for AI-accelerated materials discovery."

This recognition reflects the work of a much larger group. Over the past decade, my collaborators, students, and colleagues at PNNL, the National Laboratory of the Rockies, and the Colorado School of Mines have helped develop approaches that combine advanced electron microscopy with machine learning to probe the structure of functional materials at the atomic scale. More recently, the TIME Research Group at the Colorado School of Mines has extended that work toward autonomous experimentation, in which instruments and models work together to decide what to measure next and how to interpret it.

I am grateful to my mentors and collaborators for their support, and to the students and postdocs whose efforts underpin much of this work. I look forward to continuing to build tools that make autonomous materials science faster, more reproducible, and more informative for the broader community.
